What Is An Energy Saving Audit And Why Do One?

An energy saving audit is an assessment of opportunities to reduce energy consumption in a building. This assessment can be as easy as a walk through the building to identify apparent areas of wastage, or it may involve a comprehensive analysis, including sub-metering and data cataloguing with detailed cost benefit analysis that forms the base for the business to investigate conservation actions. Why Do An Energy Saving Audit?

The main reason for doing an energy saving audit is to identify the best ways to cut a building’s energy use. By cutting energy use you reduce greenhouse gas emissions and save money. Often and audit can identify saving opportunities that cost very little money, it will also identify opportunities where the capital investment is out weighed by a much longer payback period.

1. Conduct Energy Saving Audit
   An energy audit (as per AS3598) is a review of energy use at your facility or premises. The purpose being to identify measures that can be implemented to reduce your energy useage.
2. Planning Session
   After conducting the audit we will prepare for you a report that contains a list of energy saving recommendations, ranked in order of payback. For each recommendation the expected cost, benefit, greenhouse savings and payback period will be shown in concrete terms (for example, "by changing to energy efficient globes you will save $1,000 per year for an outlay of $700 with a payback of 0.7 years").
3. Quarterly/Monthly monitoring of your energy consumption
   Where we proactively monitor your energy costs to make sure you are receiving the benefits from the plan implemented and gives us the ability to identify further savings.

Case Study

The challenge was to reduce the energy consumption for a 14 level apartment block run by the body corporate. We conducted an energy audit of the property and achieved the following results. In summary, the economic saving to this body corporate in dollar terms is a possible economic saving of $6,732 per annum. With energy costs forecast to rise, this potential savings will only increase each year ongoing. At the time of the audit the result of the actions taken will be a reduction in electricity consumption of lighting alone of 430,366 KWh, equivalent to 29,795 MJ of energy each week. This will provide an annual energy saving of 1,547 GJ and a cost savings in excess of $6,732 per annum. The project will provide a return on investment in less than 2.5 years. In addition to this 60.25 tonnes of greenhouse gas omissions and 430, 366 litres of water will be saved each year.
