Various State Governments & Utility Companies now provide a "Feed in Tariff". During the times when you generate more power than you use, excess power is fed back into the grid and you are paid a premium for your excess electricity over and above the normal domestic electricity tariff.
The following tarriffs are anticipated to apply for Victoria from 2009 to 2024. The premium feed-in tariff will be available for households with small-scale solar photovoltaic systems (up to 2 kilowatts). The premium rate is fixed at 60c per kilowatt hour, which is about four times higher than the standard retail rate consumers pay for electricity. The Retailer Top-up Paid is yet tba. Further information regarding tariffs can be obtained from:

How does it work?
The basic idea is simple: - A Photo – Voltaic P.V. cell (Solar Panel) is a battery charger. P.V. cells are composed of silicon wafers. Under certain conditions, the sun’s rays, cause electrons from silicon atoms to be released and become available to move as an electric current. Solar Panels - composed typically of 36 PV cells – are generally rated at about 18 Volts. If they only produced 12 Volts, they would not be able to push a charging current into a 12 Volt battery.
If solar panels are considered as a battery charger, then the larger capacity (size) of the battery bank, the larger the solar panel array will be required. The capacity of the battery bank is determined by the loads (lights + appliances) required, and usually calculated in Amp hours.
